An Evening With Jonathon Thurston
Hundreds of rugby league fans were excited to see Queensland league legend Johnathan Thurston visit the beef city on October 19th on his an evening with JT tour. Enthusiastic fans waited for 6 hours at Big W for the league stars book signing. My support worker Rob and I visited the Pilbeam Theatre where a gentleman interviewed J T On stage. What an inspirational story. As a kid in south Brisbane, he was told he wouldn’t make it in the NRL because he was too small. JT went for an interview at St. Mary’s, a high school in Toowoomba which has a prominent rugby league program but was refused due to low grades. The determined teenager spent the next 12 months in the library studying and the following year, was accepted into St. Mary’s. Ricky Stuart, coach of the Bulldogs, was extremely impressed when JT played in an under 19 league tournament in Sydney which was the start of JT’s magnificent career. A career which included 2 premierships, 4 Golden boots, the captaincy of the North Queensland Cowboys and being a member of the greatest origin team ever, the mighty maroons, who won 11 out 12 series from 2006 – 2017. Johnathan was named Queenslander of the year for 2017 & nominated Australian of the year. Rob & I went backstage to meet the league legend where I shook his hand and took the opportunity to ask him why he thinks his maroons team gelled so fantastically well over that long period of time. Check out his answer in this short video.
